ABSTRACT:

With the economic downturn in the early 2000s, the City of San Jose faced the pressure to convert employment lands to non-employment lands.

In October 2007, the San Jose City Council adopted the Framework for Preservation of Employment Lands to preserve remaining industrial and commercial lands in San Jose. The Framework looked to maintain a viable economy and provide services to residents of the City of San Jose. Concurrently the City defined the geographic areas and their criteria for preservation.

Employment lands are definded as non-residential designated lands supporting private sector employment.

Output:
This map was one of the many in a effort of keeping track of those employment lands conversions that were in the process of approval/denial by City Council. These conversions were both privately and staff initiated.

Of the 22 sites here displayed, only 5 of them (11%) were proposed to be converted into a different type of employment lands. The remaining 17 (89%) were proposed to be converted to non-employment lands.
